There are several possible causes for dandruff. It may be due to stress, bad nutrition, lack of rest, frequent use of gels and hair sprays, excessive use of hot curling irons etc.
Another cause is caused by micro-organism called pityrosporum-ovle which is present in every body's scalp. Dandruff is usually a result of too much oiliness of the skin and scalp rather than dryness. While it is caused by build up of dead skin, in many more severe cases a yeast-like germ aggravates it. While this germ is normally present on everyone's scalp, it can produce some irritation if it grows heavily.
Hormones may also be another important cause, because dandruff usually starts after puberty and is more common in men than women. For unknown reasons, people with some illnesses, such as Parkinson’s disease, are more likely to have dandruff.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a frequent cause of dandruff. Dandruff caused by seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by red, greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales.
Symptoms of Dandruff include:
Flakes of skin that ranges from small and white to large, greasy and yellow.
Itchy flaking that appears on the scalp or eyebrows, or around the hairline, ears or nose.
Treatment to get rid of dandruff
Dandruff can be removed by massaging the hair for half an hour with curd which has been kept in the open for three days, or with a few drops of lime juice mixed with amla juice every night, before going to bed. Another measure which helps to counteract dandruff is to dilute cider vinegar with an equal quantity of water and dab this on to the hair with cotton wool in-between shampooing. Cider vinegar added to the final rinsing water after shampooing also helps to disperse dandruff.
Eggs and cabbage also provide vitamin B6 in addition to supplying sulfur which is nature's beauty mineral for the scalp. Sometimes an allergy to dairy products may cause dandruff in which case alternative food sources of vitamin B6 are preferred.
Beets have been found useful in dandruff. Both tops and roots should be boiled in water and this water should be massaged into the scalp with the finger tips every night. White beet is better for this purpose. This is a good home remedy for dandruff.
Dandruff shampoo: Dandruff shampoos are safe for children, but it is not sure that your child or you has the condition, since dandruff is usually caused by seborrheic dermatitis. There are several anti dandruff shampoo available in market. You can use any by doctor's prescription.
